Gary Carmody Conway
Artist
Renaissance Man
Few people bridge the worlds of fine art, film, and winemaking like Gary Conway. A true Renaissance man, Gary’s legacy spans from starring roles in iconic TV series such as Burke’s Law and Land of the Giants, to pioneering the premium wine movement in Paso Robles.
Gary was one of the first to plant vines in what is now considered California’s most geologically unique winegrowing region. For over three decades, his vineyard — Carmody McKnight Estate Wines — has been the subject of major university research and industry interest for its volcanic soils and natural growing practices. Recognized as a leader in natural winemaking and organic farming, Gary continues to champion sustainable agriculture and terroir-driven wines.
An accomplished painter, screenwriter, and filmmaker, Gary’s creative journey began early — winning major art prizes before the age of 16 and receiving full scholarships to top U.S. art schools. He graduated from UCLA with a degree in Art History, and later became a published author and award-winning artist. His landscapes have been exhibited coast to coast and featured in his acclaimed book Art of the Vineyard.
In addition to wine and art, Gary, along with his wife Marian McKnight (Miss America 1957), helped introduce Tuscan olive trees and traditional balsamic vinegar to California. Together with their daughter, Kathleen, the family has shaped the region’s artisanal food and wine culture.
Gary’s story — including the fabled crash-landing that led him to the land he would transform — is one of relentless creativity, innovation, and connection to the earth. His life’s work is both a celebration of nature’s beauty and a commitment to preserving it for generations to come.
